Habitat

Steller's sculpin inhabits cold, marine waters of the North Pacific, including coastal areas with rocky or sandy bottoms from shallow intertidal zones to depths of about 200 meters. It prefers regions with strong currents and abundant cover, such as around Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the coasts of Japan and Korea. These environments provide shelter and ample food sources.

Diet

Steller's sculpin primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and benthic invertebrates such as worms and mollusks. It is an ambush predator that hunts on the ocean floor, often at night or in low-light conditions. Feeding behavior involves lying in wait and using its large mouth to suck in prey.

Behavior

Steller's sculpin is primarily solitary and nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden in rock crevices or under substrates to avoid predators. It exhibits territorial behavior, defending small areas around its hiding spots, and is generally sedentary but can dart quickly to capture prey. During breeding, males become more active in guarding nests.

Conservation Status

Listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN.
