Habitat

This species inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow coastal waters of the western Pacific, including areas around Australia. It prefers depths from 1 to 50 meters where soft substrates allow it to bury itself effectively. These environments are often near reefs or estuaries with moderate currents.

Diet

The Spotted Australian Stargazer primarily eats small fish, crustaceans, and polychaete worms. It uses an ambush feeding strategy, lying hidden in the sand and striking quickly at prey that passes by. Feeding activity peaks at night when it is most active.

Behavior

This fish is solitary and territorial, spending most of its time buried in sand with only its eyes and mouth exposed. It is primarily nocturnal, emerging to hunt or feed during low light conditions. When threatened, it can deliver a venomous strike from its spines, and it exhibits minimal social interactions.

Conservation Status

Listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN.
