Habitat

This species inhabits rocky reefs and deep-water environments in the Eastern Central Pacific, typically at depths of 50 to 400 meters. It prefers areas with crevices and structures for hiding, such as those found around islands like the Revillagigedos and Clarion Islands. These habitats offer protection from currents and predators.

Diet

The spotback scorpionfish primarily feeds on smaller fish, crustaceans like shrimp, and mollusks such as squid. It employs an ambush strategy, remaining motionless on the seafloor before striking quickly. Feeding activity peaks at night or in low-light conditions to avoid detection.

Behavior

Spotback scorpionfish are solitary and territorial, often perching on rocks or coral to blend in with their surroundings. They are primarily nocturnal, hunting at night and resting during the day. If threatened, they may flare their spines as a defense mechanism.

Fishing

This specie is considered to be a good food fish.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
