Habitat

Spotfin porcupinefish inhabit tropical and subtropical marine waters, commonly found around coral reefs, rocky crevices, and seagrass beds. They prefer depths from shallow coastal areas to about 50 meters and are distributed across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

Diet

They primarily feed on hard-shelled invertebrates such as mollusks, crustaceans, and sea urchins, using their strong beak-like jaws to crush shells. Feeding behavior is nocturnal, with the fish foraging on the reef floor or in crevices to avoid predators. They may also consume smaller fish occasionally.

Behavior

These fish are solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending the day hidden in reef crevices and becoming active at night to hunt. They exhibit a defensive behavior of inflating their bodies with water or air when threatened, making them appear larger and more intimidating. They are not strongly territorial but may compete for food resources in shared habitats.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
