Habitat
The splendid alfonsino inhabits deep oceanic waters, typically between 200 and 600 meters depth, over continental slopes and around seamounts. It prefers rocky or rugged substrates in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. These areas provide cover and abundant prey in the pelagic zone.
Diet
The splendid alfonsino primarily feeds on smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans in the midwater depths. It employs ambush tactics during nighttime feeding when it is most active. This carnivorous diet supports its energy needs in the low-light environments of the deep sea.
Behavior
Splendid alfonsino are typically solitary or form small schools, making them less social than many reef fish. They are nocturnal hunters, actively foraging in the twilight zone with bursts of speed to catch prey. These fish may exhibit territorial behavior around feeding grounds but generally avoid aggressive interactions.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
