Habitat

This species inhabits continental shelves and slopes in the western Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico. It prefers rocky or sandy bottoms at depths of 100 to 400 meters, where it can hide and ambush prey. These areas provide cover among reefs and debris.

Diet

The Spinycheek scorpionfish primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and squid. It employs an ambush strategy, remaining motionless on the seafloor before striking quickly. Feeding activity peaks at night when prey is more abundant.

Behavior

This fish is solitary and sedentary, spending most of its time camouflaged on the ocean floor to avoid detection. It is an ambush predator that relies on stealth rather than speed. When threatened, it may flare its spines or deliver a venomous sting as a defense.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
