Habitat
Sperm whales primarily inhabit deep ocean waters worldwide, favoring areas with depths greater than 1,000 meters. They are found in all major oceans, from equatorial regions to subpolar zones, and prefer productive waters near continental slopes or underwater ridges.
Diet
Sperm whales mainly feed on giant squid and other cephalopods, which they capture during deep dives to depths of up to 2,000 meters. They also consume fish such as lanternfish and occasionally sharks or octopuses. Feeding typically occurs at night or during long dives that can last over an hour.
Behavior
Sperm whales form matrilineal social groups where females and young stay together, while adult males are often solitary or form bachelor pods. They are highly vocal, using clicks and codas for echolocation and communication, and exhibit behaviors like breaching, lobtailing, and spyhopping. These whales are known for their exceptional diving abilities, spending much of their time in deep waters hunting prey.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the sperm whale as Vulnerable, with population trends showing slow recovery in some areas due to past whaling. Major threats include ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and noise pollution from human activities.
