Habitat

Spectral tarsiers inhabit tropical rainforests and secondary forests on the islands of Sulawesi and nearby regions in Indonesia. They prefer dense vegetation with plenty of trees for vertical movement, typically at elevations from sea level up to 2,000 meters.

Diet

Spectral tarsiers primarily eat insects such as beetles, crickets, and moths, which they hunt using their acute hearing and vision. They are nocturnal feeders, pouncing on prey from perches, and occasionally supplement their diet with small vertebrates like lizards or birds.

Behavior

Spectral tarsiers are nocturnal and solitary or live in pairs, spending their nights leaping between trees in search of food. They are highly territorial, marking their areas with scent and communicating through ultrasonic calls that are inaudible to humans. These primates are known for their vertical clinging and leaping locomotion, making them agile in forested environments.

Conservation Status

The spectral tarsier is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with major threats including hunting and fragmentation of rainforest habitats.
