Habitat
They inhabit cool, subantarctic waters of the Southern Hemisphere, including areas around South America, New Zealand, and Antarctica, preferring deep offshore pelagic zones but occasionally venturing near continental shelves. These porpoises are adapted to cold marine environments with strong currents.
Diet
Spectacled porpoises primarily eat small fish such as lanternfish and myctophids, as well as squid, which they hunt in small groups using echolocation. They feed mainly at night or in low-light conditions to avoid predators.
Behavior
They are social animals that typically travel in small groups of 2-10 individuals, often family units, and are most active during the day. Spectacled porpoises exhibit playful behaviors like breaching and bow-riding, but they are generally elusive and avoid boats. They use echolocation for navigation and hunting, showing little territorial aggression.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Data Deficient due to limited data, but potential threats include bycatch in fishing nets and habitat degradation from climate change. Population trends are unknown, but incidental capture remains a concern in some regions.
