Habitat

Spectacled bears primarily inhabit the montane forests and cloud forests of the Andes mountains, ranging from western Venezuela to Bolivia. They prefer high-altitude areas between 1,500 and 4,200 meters, including dense vegetation for cover and food sources.

Diet

Spectacled bears are omnivorous, feeding mainly on fruits, berries, and bromeliads, which make up the bulk of their diet. They occasionally eat insects, small mammals, or carrion, and are known to forage actively during dawn and dusk in forested areas.

Behavior

Spectacled bears are primarily solitary, coming together only for mating, with mothers staying with cubs for about two years. They are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular, spending much of their time climbing trees and building platforms for resting or feeding. They exhibit territorial behavior by marking trees with claws and scent, and are generally elusive to avoid human encounters.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the spectacled bear as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and human encroachment. Major threats include poaching for body parts and conflicts with farmers.
