Habitat
Sowerby's beaked whales inhabit deep oceanic waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, typically in areas with depths exceeding 1,000 meters. They are found from the eastern coast of North America to Europe, including the waters around Iceland and the Mediterranean, preferring offshore environments away from continental shelves.
Diet
They primarily feed on deep-sea squid, such as those from the family Histioteuthidae, and various fish like myctophids. Hunting occurs at great depths using echolocation, often at night when prey is more active. Their feeding behavior involves long dives lasting up to an hour.
Behavior
Sowerby's beaked whales are typically found in small groups of 2-7 individuals, though they can be solitary. They are deep divers, capable of reaching depths over 1,000 meters for foraging, and exhibit elusive behavior, making them hard to observe at the surface. They are not highly social and show little territoriality, often avoiding boats and other disturbances.
Conservation Status
Sowerby's beaked whale is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, meaning there is insufficient information to assess its population trends accurately. Major threats include potential impacts from military sonar and entanglement in fishing gear.
