Habitat
These squirrels primarily inhabit sagebrush steppe and shrublands in southern Idaho, preferring open areas with loose, well-drained soils for burrowing. They are found at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters, avoiding dense forests and wet areas.
Diet
They mainly consume seeds, grasses, and forbs, with occasional insects and roots for added protein. Feeding occurs primarily in the early morning and late afternoon, allowing them to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
Behavior
Southern Idaho ground squirrels are diurnal and live in colonies with extensive burrow systems for shelter and hibernation. They exhibit territorial behavior, especially during mating season, and communicate through vocalizations and body language. Social structure involves family groups that cooperate in defense but can be competitive for resources.
Conservation Status
The species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss from agriculture and development, with populations showing a declining trend.
