Habitat
This species primarily inhabits the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin, including Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. It prefers dense, mature forests with tall trees for nesting and foraging. They are adaptable to both primary and secondary growth areas as long as there is ample canopy cover.
Diet
The Southern Amazon red squirrel mainly feeds on nuts, seeds, and fruits from trees like Brazil nuts and figs. It also consumes insects, such as beetles, and occasionally supplements its diet with bird eggs or fungi. Feeding activity peaks during the day when they are most active in the canopy.
Behavior
Southern Amazon red squirrels are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time climbing and leaping between trees. They are typically solitary but may form small family groups during breeding. They exhibit territorial behavior, defending food sources and nests with vocal calls and chases.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation in the Amazon.
