Habitat

The Somali golden mole inhabits dry savannas, grasslands, and sandy soils in eastern Ethiopia and Somalia. It prefers areas with loose, well-drained soil that allows for easy burrowing and foraging.

Diet

It primarily feeds on earthworms, insects, and other invertebrates found underground. The mole forages nocturnally by tunneling through the soil, using its sensitive snout to detect prey.

Behavior

Somali golden moles are solitary and fossorial, spending most of their time burrowing underground to avoid predators and extreme temperatures. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to forage, and exhibit territorial behavior by marking their tunnels with scent.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Somali golden mole is Data Deficient due to limited research, with potential threats from habitat loss due to agriculture and urbanization, and an unknown population trend.
