Habitat

This species primarily inhabits fast-flowing rivers and streams in Southeast Asia, including the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins, with preferences for rocky or sandy substrates. It thrives in clear, oxygenated waters ranging from lowland to mountainous regions. They are less common in stagnant or polluted environments.

Diet

The Soldier river barb is omnivorous, feeding on insects, crustaceans, algae, and small plant matter found in riverbeds. It forages actively during the day, often in schools, using its barbels to probe the substrate. Feeding peaks in the morning and evening when prey is more abundant.

Behavior

Soldier river barbs are schooling fish that form groups for protection and foraging, making them highly social in their river habitats. They are diurnal, active during the day and resting in quieter areas at night, with minimal territorial aggression except during spawning. These fish exhibit quick, evasive swimming patterns to avoid threats.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
