Habitat

This gibbon inhabits subtropical and tropical moist evergreen forests in the mountainous regions of southwestern China and northeastern India. They prefer areas with dense canopy cover and tall trees for movement and nesting, typically at elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 meters.

Diet

Skywalker hoolock gibbons primarily eat ripe fruits such as figs and berries, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and occasionally insects. They forage in the upper canopy during the day, using their strong grips to access food, and may spend several hours feeding in the morning and late afternoon.

Behavior

These gibbons live in small family groups consisting of a mated pair and their offspring, exhibiting strong territorial behavior defended through loud, duet songs in the early morning. They are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time swinging through trees and rarely descending to the ground. Social interactions include grooming and playful behaviors among group members.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Skywalker hoolock gibbon as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include hunting and human encroachment in their limited range.
