Habitat
The Siskiyou chipmunk inhabits coniferous forests and mixed woodlands in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. It prefers areas with rocky outcrops, dense underbrush, and elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters.
Diet
This species primarily eats seeds, nuts, berries, and fungi, supplemented by insects and other invertebrates. It forages on the ground and in low vegetation, often storing food in burrows for winter. Feeding activity peaks in the early morning and late afternoon.
Behavior
Siskiyou chipmunks are diurnal and solitary, spending much of their time foraging or defending territories. They create burrows in rocky areas for nesting and hibernation, and use cheek pouches to carry food. They exhibit territorial behavior, chasing away intruders with vocal calls and chases.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Siskiyou chipmunk as Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss from logging and development poses a potential threat.
