Habitat
Silvery woolly monkeys primarily inhabit the upper canopy of tropical rainforests in the western Amazon basin, including parts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil. They prefer dense, humid forests with tall trees for foraging and shelter, avoiding open areas or disturbed habitats.
Diet
Silvery woolly monkeys mainly eat fruits such as figs and berries, supplemented by leaves, seeds, and occasionally insects. They forage in groups during the day, spending much of their time in the treetops to access food sources high in the canopy. Feeding behavior includes selective picking of ripe fruits to maximize energy intake.
Behavior
Silvery woolly monkeys live in large, cohesive groups of 20-50 individuals with a complex social structure including hierarchies and cooperative care. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, and exhibit territorial behaviors like vocalizations to defend their range. Notable behaviors include mutual grooming to strengthen bonds and coordinated group movements for foraging and predator avoidance.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the silvery woolly monkey as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat destruction from deforestation and hunting for the pet trade. Major threats include fragmentation of rainforest habitats and human encroachment.
