Habitat

Silvery Lutungs primarily inhabit mangrove forests, coastal swamps, and lowland rainforests in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. They prefer areas with dense vegetation and proximity to water sources, avoiding open or highly disturbed areas. This species is adaptable but thrives in primary and secondary forests.

Diet

Silvery Lutungs mainly consume leaves, fruits, and flowers, with a strong preference for young, nutrient-rich leaves. They are folivorous and spend much of their day foraging in the treetops, typically feeding during the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Behavior

Silvery Lutungs live in multi-male, multi-female groups of 5-20 individuals, exhibiting strong social bonds and cooperative behaviors. They are diurnal and highly arboreal, spending most of their time leaping between trees and marking territories with loud calls. These monkeys are territorial, defending their home ranges from intruders, and they often engage in grooming to maintain social harmony.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies the Silvery Lutung as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for the pet trade. Major threats include fragmentation of forests and human encroachment.
