Habitat
Silver gemfish primarily inhabit deep pelagic waters of the open ocean, often over continental shelves and slopes at depths of 200 to 800 meters. They are found in the Pacific Ocean regions such as around Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Madagascar. These areas include both tropical and temperate waters.
Diet
Silver gemfish feed mainly on smaller fish like lanternfish and myctophids, as well as squid and crustaceans. They are active predators that hunt in midwater depths, typically at night using ambush tactics. Feeding occurs opportunistically when prey is abundant.
Behavior
Silver gemfish are schooling fish that form large groups for protection and coordinated hunting. They are primarily nocturnal, rising to shallower depths at night to feed, and exhibit migratory patterns following prey schools. They are not particularly territorial but may disperse during spawning.
Conservation Status
Listed as Not Evaluated by IUCN.
