Mustela nivalis russelliana

The Sichuan weasel, as…

Taxonomy

Species
Mustela nivalis

Habitat

The Sichuan weasel inhabits mountainous regions of Sichuan Province in China, primarily in grasslands, forests, and shrublands at elevations between 1,000 and 4,000 meters. It prefers areas with dense vegetation for cover and proximity to prey, avoiding open or heavily urbanized zones.

Diet

The Sichuan weasel primarily feeds on small rodents like voles and mice, as well as insects, birds, and occasionally eggs. It is an opportunistic hunter that stalks and pounces on prey, typically active at dawn and dusk to avoid larger predators.

Behavior

Sichuan weasels are solitary and territorial animals, marking their ranges with scent to deter intruders. They are primarily nocturnal, exhibiting agile and swift movements while hunting. These weasels are curious and adaptable, often using burrows for shelter.

Conservation Status

The Sichuan weasel, as a subspecies of the least weasel, is not individually assessed by the IUCN but is generally considered Least Concern; however, habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture poses a potential threat. Population trends are stable but poorly monitored in its limited range.
