Habitat
This species primarily inhabits forests, shrublands, and grasslands in eastern and central Madagascar. It prefers areas with dense undergrowth and leaf litter for cover, ranging from sea level up to about 2,000 meters in elevation.
Diet
The Short-tailed shrew tenrec mainly eats insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates like spiders and small snails. It forages nocturnally on the ground, using its sensitive snout to detect and capture prey in leaf litter. Feeding activity peaks at night to avoid predators.
Behavior
Short-tailed shrew tenrecs are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days hidden in burrows or under logs and becoming active at night to forage. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands, and are known for their high metabolic rates that require frequent feeding. They are generally quiet but may produce high-pitched sounds when threatened.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Short-tailed shrew tenrec is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion in Madagascar.
