Habitat

These whales inhabit tropical and warm temperate oceans, preferring deep offshore waters deeper than 1,000 meters. They are commonly found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, often in areas with steep underwater topography like continental slopes.

Diet

Short-finned pilot whales primarily eat squid, such as the flying squid, and various fish like mackerel and herring. They hunt in coordinated groups using echolocation to locate prey in deep waters, typically feeding at night when their prey is more active.

Behavior

They live in large pods of 10 to 100 individuals, often forming matrilineal groups with complex social structures. Short-finned pilot whales are highly social, engaging in playful behaviors like breaching and bow-riding boats, and they are known for mass stranding events possibly due to strong social bonds. They are active during the day and night, traveling long distances in search of food.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with populations generally stable but facing threats from bycatch in fisheries and marine pollution. Major concerns include ship strikes and habitat degradation from climate change.
