Habitat
Short bigeyes inhabit deep waters of the western central Atlantic Ocean, typically found on rocky reefs, coral formations, or over sandy bottoms at depths from 50 to 400 meters. They prefer areas with structures for hiding during the day, such as caves or ledges, and are common in tropical and subtropical regions.
Diet
Short bigeyes primarily feed on small fishes, shrimps, and other crustaceans, using their large eyes to hunt in low-light conditions. They are nocturnal feeders, emerging from hiding at dusk to ambush prey in the water column. Feeding occurs mainly near the seafloor where they can surprise smaller organisms.
Behavior
Short bigeyes are solitary and territorial, often resting in crevices or under ledges during the day to avoid predators. They become active at night, swimming actively to hunt prey in midwater or near the bottom. This species exhibits schooling behavior only occasionally, primarily for feeding or spawning.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
