Habitat

This species primarily inhabits the tropical rainforests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, favoring dense undergrowth and tree canopies from lowland to montane elevations up to 2,000 meters. It prefers areas with abundant vegetation for cover and food sources, avoiding open or disturbed habitats.

Diet

The Secretive dwarf squirrel feeds mainly on nuts, seeds, and fruits from forest trees and shrubs. It also consumes insects and occasionally small invertebrates, foraging actively in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid predators.

Behavior

These squirrels are primarily arboreal and diurnal, spending most of their time climbing trees and foraging in the canopy. They exhibit solitary or small family group behavior, with territorial individuals marking their areas using scent glands. They are highly secretive, often freezing or hiding in dense foliage when threatened.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists Prosciurillus abstrusus as Data Deficient due to insufficient data, but habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture poses a significant threat. Population trends are poorly understood, highlighting the need for further research.
