Habitat

This species inhabits the arid coastal deserts and scrublands of northwestern Peru and southwestern Ecuador, favoring sandy dunes, dry riverbeds, and areas with sparse vegetation. They are adapted to hot, dry conditions and avoid densely vegetated or mountainous regions.

Diet

Sechuran foxes are omnivorous, feeding primarily on small rodents, insects, and reptiles, as well as fruits and seeds when available. They hunt at night using their keen senses, often scavenging or digging for food in the desert soil. Feeding activity peaks during the cooler evening hours to conserve energy in the heat.

Behavior

Sechuran foxes are primarily nocturnal, spending days in burrows to escape the heat and emerging at night to hunt and forage. They are solitary animals except during mating season, maintaining small territories that they mark with urine and defend from intruders. They exhibit curious behavior around human settlements but are generally elusive and quick to flee when threatened.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the Sechuran fox as Near Threatened, with populations declining due to habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization. Major threats include persecution by farmers and road accidents.
