Habitat
Marine otters inhabit rocky coastlines and nearshore waters along the Pacific coast of South America, from Peru to southern Chile. They prefer areas with abundant crevices for dens and access to shallow marine environments rich in food sources.
Diet
Marine otters primarily eat fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, which they hunt in shallow coastal waters. They are opportunistic feeders, often using their sensitive whiskers to detect prey on the ocean floor, and they feed mainly during the day.
Behavior
Marine otters are primarily solitary and territorial, marking their coastal dens with scent to defend against intruders. They are diurnal, spending much of their time swimming and foraging in shallow waters, and they exhibit playful behaviors like sliding on rocks.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status for the marine otter is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat destruction, pollution, and incidental capture in fishing gear.
