Habitat

This species primarily inhabits montane forests in the eastern Andes of Colombia, at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. It prefers dense cloud forests with abundant trees and undergrowth for shelter and foraging.

Diet

The Santander dwarf squirrel feeds mainly on nuts, seeds, fruits, and occasionally insects. It forages actively during the day in trees, using its dexterous paws to handle and consume food items.

Behavior

This squirrel is diurnal and arboreal, spending most of its time climbing and foraging in trees. It is generally solitary or forms small family groups, exhibiting territorial behaviors to protect food sources and nests, and communicates through vocalizations and tail flicks.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Vulnerable due to habitat loss from deforestation and agriculture. Population trends are decreasing, with ongoing threats from human activities in its limited range.
