Habitat

Sand tilefish inhabit sandy or rubble bottoms in the western Atlantic, from shallow coastal waters to depths of about 100 meters. They prefer areas with structures like coral reefs or rocks for burrowing and hiding. These fish are commonly found in warm tropical and subtropical waters around the Bahamas, Florida, and Brazil.

Diet

Sand tilefish primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks found on the ocean floor. They forage by digging into the sand or hovering near burrows, capturing prey with quick strikes. Feeding activity peaks during the day when visibility is high.

Behavior

Sand tilefish are solitary or found in small groups, often burrowing into the sand to escape predators or rest. They exhibit territorial behavior around their burrows, defending them aggressively, and are most active during daylight hours. These fish can change color slightly for camouflage and are known to form temporary pairs during spawning.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
