Habitat

Saito's tilefish inhabits deep waters of the Pacific Ocean, commonly found around coral reefs, sandy bottoms, and muddy substrates. It prefers depths between 100 and 200 meters, particularly in areas like Indonesia, the Philippines, and the South Pacific. These environments provide shelter and abundant food sources.

Diet

Saito's tilefish primarily feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks found on the seafloor. It uses its strong jaws to crush shells and forages during the day as a benthic predator. Feeding behavior involves ambushing prey from burrows or hidden spots.

Behavior

Saito's tilefish is generally solitary or forms small groups, often constructing burrows in sediment for protection. It exhibits diurnal activity, spending daylight hours foraging and retreating to burrows at night. This species is territorial around its burrow, defending it from intruders.
