Habitat

They primarily inhabit rivers, streams, and reservoirs in central California, such as the Sacramento-San Joaquin system, preferring clear, cool waters with rocky or gravel substrates. These fish are often found in deeper pools, runs, and slower currents rather than swift rapids.

Diet

Juvenile Sacramento pikeminnow feed on insects, crustaceans, and small fish, while adults are mainly piscivorous, preying on other fish species. They are opportunistic daytime feeders, ambushing prey in open water or near underwater structures.

Behavior

Sacramento pikeminnow are generally solitary and territorial, particularly during spawning when they defend nesting sites. They are diurnal, active during the day, and often hide in deeper waters or under cover to avoid threats. These fish exhibit aggressive behavior towards competitors and prey.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
