Habitat

This species primarily inhabits montane forests in the Ruwenzori Mountains of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, at elevations between 1,500 and 4,000 meters. They prefer dense undergrowth, tree canopies, and areas with abundant vegetation for shelter and food sources.

Diet

The Ruwenzori sun squirrel mainly eats fruits, seeds, and nuts from forest trees, supplemented by insects and occasionally bark or fungi. They are diurnal foragers, actively searching for food in the canopy during the day, and often cache excess items for later consumption.

Behavior

These squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time climbing trees and foraging alone or in pairs. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking areas with scent glands, and are generally solitary outside of breeding seasons. They communicate through vocalizations and tail movements to warn of threats.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status of the Ruwenzori sun squirrel is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and human activities in the mountains.
