Habitat
Russian desmans inhabit freshwater rivers, lakes, and ponds with slow-moving water and muddy banks in eastern Europe and western Asia, particularly in Russia. They prefer areas with dense vegetation along the water's edge for cover and burrowing. These habitats are often in lowland floodplains or forested regions.
Diet
Russian desmans primarily eat aquatic insects, worms, mollusks, and small fish, which they forage for by diving underwater. They are nocturnal feeders, using their sensitive snouts to detect prey in the sediment. Feeding occurs mainly at night to avoid predators.
Behavior
Russian desmans are solitary and territorial animals that are primarily nocturnal, spending their days in burrows dug into riverbanks. They are excellent swimmers with webbed hind feet, often diving for food and traveling along waterways. They mark their territories with scent glands and are generally elusive, avoiding human contact.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Russian desman is Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from dam construction and pollution. Major threats include water contamination and fragmentation of river habitats.
