Habitat

Primarily found on sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal and continental shelf waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It inhabits depths from 50 to 200 meters, preferring warmer temperate and tropical regions. This species avoids strong currents and rocky areas.

Diet

Feeds mainly on small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans. It is a nocturnal hunter, using ambush tactics from the seafloor to capture prey. Feeding activity peaks at dusk and dawn.

Behavior

This species is generally solitary and benthic, spending most of the day resting on the ocean floor. It becomes active at night for foraging and is not strongly territorial, though it may compete for food. Royal flagfins exhibit cryptic behavior to avoid detection.
