Habitat

This species inhabits grasslands and fynbos shrublands in the Western Cape of South Africa, preferring loose, sandy soils that allow for extensive burrowing. They are adapted to Mediterranean climates with wet winters and dry summers, avoiding dense forests or rocky areas.

Diet

Robust golden moles primarily feed on earthworms, insects, and other soil invertebrates found in their underground tunnels. They hunt by probing the soil with their sensitive snouts, often feeding at night when they are most active.

Behavior

These moles are solitary and primarily nocturnal, spending most of their time digging complex burrow systems underground to search for food and escape predators. They exhibit territorial behavior, marking their tunnels with scent and communicating through vibrations in the soil. Males may travel more widely during the breeding season compared to females.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from agriculture, urbanization, and mining in South Africa. Major threats include fragmentation of their grassland habitats and potential predation by introduced species.
