Habitat
The Rio Purus titi inhabits tropical rainforests in the western Amazon basin, particularly along riverine areas in Brazil and Peru. They prefer dense, undisturbed forest canopies with plenty of trees for movement and shelter. This species is adapted to humid, lowland environments with access to water sources.
Diet
The Rio Purus titi primarily eats fruits, supplemented by leaves, flowers, and insects, which they forage in the forest canopy. They exhibit diurnal feeding behavior, often in pairs, and use their dexterous hands to manipulate food items. Feeding peaks in the early morning and late afternoon when fruits are most abundant.
Behavior
Rio Purus titis are monogamous and live in small family groups of 2-7 individuals, maintaining strong pair bonds through duets of vocal calls. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in the middle to upper canopy, and exhibit territorial behavior by marking boundaries with scent and calls. These monkeys are agile leapers and often engage in grooming to strengthen social ties.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Rio Purus titi is Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation. Major threats include logging, agriculture, and hunting pressure in their range.
