Habitat
Rhesus monkeys inhabit a variety of environments including forests, grasslands, and urban areas across South, Central, and Southeast Asia. They prefer areas near water sources and can adapt to both tropical and temperate climates. Their range extends from Afghanistan to China, often in proximity to human settlements.
Diet
Rhesus monkeys are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, leaves, insects, and small vertebrates. They forage during the day, often in groups, and will raid crops or garbage in human-populated areas. Feeding behavior includes both ground foraging and tree climbing to access food sources.
Behavior
Rhesus monkeys live in social troops of 20-200 individuals, with a strict hierarchy dominated by males. They are diurnal, active during the day, and exhibit territorial behaviors like vocalizations and displays to defend their range. Notable behaviors include grooming to build social bonds and using tools like stones for cracking nuts.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies the Rhesus monkey as Least Concern, though some populations are declining due to habitat loss and hunting. Major threats include urbanization, deforestation, and conflicts with humans over resources.
