Habitat

Reef butterflyfish inhabit shallow coral reefs and lagoons in tropical waters, preferring clear, warm environments with abundant coral structures for shelter. They are commonly found at depths of 3-30 meters in the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Diet

They primarily feed on coral polyps, small invertebrates like worms and crustaceans, and algae. Feeding occurs during the day as they graze on reef surfaces, using their elongated snout to extract food from crevices.

Behavior

Reef butterflyfish are typically solitary or found in pairs, defending small territories around coral heads. They are diurnal, active during the day foraging for food and retreating to crevices at night for safety. They exhibit cautious behavior, quickly darting away from potential threats.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
