Habitat
This species primarily inhabits tropical and subtropical forests in Southeast Asia, including mountainous regions of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It prefers dense vegetation with tall trees for nesting and foraging, often at elevations up to 2,000 meters.
Diet
Red-throated squirrels eat a variety of nuts, fruits, seeds, and insects, with a preference for items like acorns and berries. They forage mainly during the day, using their sharp incisors to crack open hard shells and exhibiting caching behavior to store food.
Behavior
Red-throated squirrels are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time climbing trees and leaping between branches. They are typically solitary but may form pairs during mating season, and they defend territories by vocalizing and chasing intruders. Notable behaviors include alarm calls to warn of predators and food caching for later use.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend. Major threats include habitat loss from deforestation and fragmentation of forests.
