Habitat

Red scorpionfish inhabit rocky and coral reefs, as well as seagrass beds and sandy areas with structures for hiding, primarily in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. They prefer depths from 10 to 200 meters, often in warm temperate to subtropical waters with ample cover.

Diet

Red scorpionfish primarily eat small fish, crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, and occasionally mollusks. They are ambush predators that lie in wait on the seafloor, using their camouflage to surprise prey, and they feed mainly at night.

Behavior

Red scorpionfish are solitary and territorial, often remaining motionless on the substrate to blend in with their surroundings. They are primarily nocturnal hunters but can be active during the day if food is available, and they exhibit defensive behaviors like flaring their spines when threatened. This species is not migratory and tends to stay within a defined home range.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
