Habitat
This species primarily inhabits steppe grasslands, semi-deserts, and mountainous regions in Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. They prefer areas with loose soil for burrowing and are often found in open fields near agricultural lands. Their range extends up to 2,000 meters in elevation, avoiding dense forests.
Diet
Red-cheeked ground squirrels mainly eat seeds, grasses, and roots, supplemented by insects and occasionally fruits. They forage during the day, often storing food in burrows for winter. Feeding activity peaks in the morning and late afternoon to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
Behavior
These squirrels are diurnal and live in colonies with complex burrow systems, exhibiting social behaviors like alarm calling to warn of threats. They are territorial, especially during mating season, and hibernate for several months in winter. Notable behaviors include standing on hind legs to survey surroundings and engaging in playful chasing among juveniles.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend due to its wide distribution. Major threats include habitat loss from agriculture and predation by introduced species.
