Habitat

This species inhabits temperate and subtropical forests in Southeast Asia, including mountainous regions of China, India, and Myanmar. It prefers old-growth forests with tall trees for gliding and nesting. They are often found at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters.

Diet

The red and white giant flying squirrel primarily eats fruits, nuts, and seeds, supplemented by insects and occasionally bird eggs. It forages nocturnally, gliding between trees to access food sources. Feeding behavior includes caching food for later use.

Behavior

These squirrels are nocturnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in trees and gliding up to 100 meters between them. They are generally solitary or live in pairs, establishing territories in their forest homes and communicating with vocal calls. Notable behaviors include nest building in tree hollows and aggressive defense of food sources.

Conservation Status

The IUCN status is Least Concern, with a stable population trend, though habitat loss due to deforestation poses a significant threat. Conservation efforts focus on protecting forest habitats in their range.
