Habitat
Quillbacks primarily inhabit large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in North America, favoring slow-moving waters with sand, gravel, or rocky bottoms. They are commonly found in the Mississippi River basin, Great Lakes, and other major drainages, avoiding fast currents and preferring depths up to 20 feet.
Diet
Quillbacks are bottom feeders that mainly consume aquatic insects, mollusks, small crustaceans, and plant material. They forage along the substrate using their subterminal mouth, with feeding activity peaking at night or in low-light conditions. This opportunistic diet helps them adapt to various aquatic environments.
Behavior
Quillbacks are generally solitary and nocturnal, spending much of their time resting on the bottom during the day and foraging at night. They exhibit territorial behavior during spawning seasons but are otherwise non-aggressive and tend to burrow into the substrate for protection. This species is known for its ability to tolerate low oxygen levels in murky waters.
Conservation Status
Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
