Habitat
This subspecies primarily inhabits forested areas, grasslands, and rocky terrains on Jeju Island, South Korea, preferring elevations up to 1,000 meters. It adapts to a mix of volcanic landscapes and shrublands, often seeking cover in dense vegetation or rock crevices. Human development has increasingly fragmented these habitats, pushing them toward more remote areas.
Diet
The Quelpart kolonok feeds mainly on small mammals like voles and mice, as well as birds, eggs, insects, and occasionally fruits or carrion. It is an opportunistic hunter, actively foraging at dawn and dusk in a solitary manner. Feeding behavior includes stalking prey through underbrush and using its agility to capture fast-moving targets.
Behavior
This subspecies is primarily solitary and nocturnal, spending its days in dens or burrows and becoming active at night to hunt. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking its range with scent and defending it aggressively from intruders. Notable behaviors include agile climbing and swimming, as well as a playful curiosity when not threatened.
Conservation Status
The Siberian weasel, including this subspecies, is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, but local populations on Jeju Island may be declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Major threats include urbanization, roadkill, and potential competition from introduced species.
