Habitat
The Qionglai pika inhabits high-altitude meadows, rocky slopes, and alpine grasslands in the Qionglai Mountains of Sichuan Province, China, typically at elevations between 3,000 and 4,500 meters. It prefers areas with abundant vegetation for foraging and rock crevices for shelter, avoiding dense forests or lowlands.
Diet
This pika primarily eats grasses, herbs, and alpine plants, foraging during the day to gather fresh vegetation. It exhibits haymaking behavior, collecting and drying plants to store as haypiles for winter food reserves, which helps it survive harsh seasons.
Behavior
Qionglai pikas are diurnal and live in loose colonies with overlapping territories, often communicating through high-pitched calls to warn of predators or establish boundaries. They are agile climbers on rocky terrain and spend much of their time foraging or maintaining haypiles, showing territorial aggression towards intruders. These pikas are solitary outside of breeding season but may share burrows for warmth.
Conservation Status
The IUCN lists the Qionglai pika as Vulnerable due to habitat loss from agriculture, overgrazing, and climate change, with populations continuing to decline in its restricted range.
