Habitat
This species inhabits montane forests and shrublands in southwestern China, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth and moist soil at elevations of 2,000 to 3,500 meters. It prefers cool, humid environments near streams or rocky outcrops for shelter.
Diet
The Pygmy brown-toothed shrew primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, ants, and earthworms, as well as other small invertebrates like spiders and centipedes. It is an active forager, hunting mostly at night using its keen sense of smell, and consumes food frequently due to its high metabolic rate.
Behavior
This shrew is solitary and territorial, marking its area with scent and avoiding others except during mating. It is primarily nocturnal, spending the day in burrows or under logs, and exhibits rapid, darting movements while foraging. Vocalizations are rare but may include high-pitched squeaks for communication.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status of the Pygmy brown-toothed shrew is Data Deficient due to limited research, but habitat loss from deforestation poses a potential threat. Population trends are unknown, though it may be stable in remote areas.
