Habitat
Purus red howlers primarily inhabit the tropical rainforests of the western Amazon basin, including areas in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. They prefer the upper canopy of mature forests with dense vegetation for cover and food sources. These monkeys are rarely found in disturbed or secondary growth areas.
Diet
Their diet mainly consists of leaves, fruits, and flowers, with a focus on nutrient-rich young leaves and seasonal fruits. They exhibit selective feeding behavior to avoid toxic plants and spend much of the day foraging in the treetops. Feeding typically occurs during the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active.
Behavior
Purus red howlers live in social troops of 5-15 individuals, usually led by a dominant male, and communicate through loud, territorial howls that can be heard up to 5 km away. They are diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time resting and foraging in trees to conserve energy from their leaf-based diet. These monkeys are generally sedentary but will defend their territory aggressively against intruders.
Conservation Status
The IUCN status is Vulnerable, with population trends showing a decline due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting. Major threats include logging, agriculture expansion, and fragmentation of rainforest habitats.
