Habitat

This species primarily inhabits large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in East Asia, preferring areas with moderate water flow and abundant vegetation or structures for cover. It is commonly found in freshwater systems like the Amur River basin and Lake Buir, avoiding fast-moving streams or highly polluted waters.

Diet

Predatory carp mainly feed on smaller fish, such as minnows and juvenile cyprinids, as well as insects, crustaceans, and occasionally zooplankton. They are active predators that hunt in schools during the day, using ambush tactics in vegetated areas to capture prey.

Behavior

Predatory carp are schooling fish that form groups for protection and hunting, typically active during daylight hours in open water. They exhibit territorial behavior during spawning seasons, aggressively defending nesting sites, and are known to migrate seasonally in response to water levels and food availability.

Conservation Status

Listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
