Habitat

Preble's shrew inhabits riparian areas along streams and rivers in the foothills and mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. They prefer moist environments with dense vegetation, such as meadows and shrublands, which provide cover and prey. These habitats are typically at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters.

Diet

Preble's shrew primarily eats insects like beetles, ants, and spiders, as well as earthworms and other small invertebrates. They forage actively both day and night due to their high metabolic rate, often hunting in leaf litter or under rocks. Feeding occurs frequently, with individuals consuming up to their body weight in food daily.

Behavior

Preble's shrews are solitary and territorial, defending small home ranges with scent markings. They are primarily nocturnal, though they can be active during the day, and exhibit rapid, twitching movements while foraging. These shrews communicate with high-pitched squeaks and have a frenetic lifestyle due to their need for constant food.

Conservation Status

The IUCN classifies Preble's shrew as Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss from urban development and agriculture. Conservation efforts include protecting riparian corridors in its limited range.
