Habitat

Portenko's shrew inhabits alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and coniferous forests in the Altai Mountains of Russia and possibly adjacent areas in Central Asia. It prefers moist, high-elevation terrains above 1,500 meters where there is ample cover from vegetation and rocks. These areas provide the cool, humid conditions necessary for its survival.

Diet

Portenko's shrew primarily feeds on insects such as beetles, spiders, and earthworms, which it hunts actively in leaf litter and soil. It has a high metabolic rate, requiring it to eat frequently throughout the day and night, often consuming up to its body weight in food daily. Feeding behavior includes quick, darting movements to capture prey.

Behavior

Portenko's shrew is primarily nocturnal and solitary, spending its active hours foraging in tunnels and under vegetation. It exhibits territorial behavior, marking its area with scent and aggressively defending it from intruders. Despite its small size, it is highly energetic and vocal, producing high-pitched squeaks during interactions.

Conservation Status

Portenko's shrew has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, but it may face threats from habitat loss due to climate change and human activities in the Altai region. Population trends are poorly understood, suggesting a need for further research.
